Threats to the Integrity of South Africas Democracy Essay

Through a fair electoral system, the South African government has elected and been led by the African National Congress (ANC) over the past twenty years. Yet, with the limitations on rights, they have not been able to identify with all of the main circumstances that make up a democratic government. A democratic political system must meet â€Å"three essential conditions: meaningful and extensive competition among individuals and organized groups (especially political parties) for the major positions of government; a highly inclusive level of political participation in the selection of leaders and policies, at least through regular and fair elections,†¦and a level of civil and political liberties – freedom of expression, freedom of press,†¦show more content†¦[However], first, even if, say, one has freedom of power across three of the four dimensions of freedom discussed, one’s lack of power in only one is sufï ¬ cient to make one unfree† (Hamilton , 2011, p. 356). Hamilton’s words echo Mandela’s stating that by one’s lack of freedom makes the other unfree as well. This presents a problem for South Africa as they continue to move forward with democracy. Allowing the ANC to pass bills such as the Protection of State Information bill permits them to impede on freedoms and control more than is necessary. It also lets them cover up any wrongdoings that may be done by the party. This, the Protection of State Information Bill, sets up an access to state information that is unalike what was envisioned in the country’s constitution. It creates activity that is meant for the public illegal, furthermore, criminalizing many things that have the public’s interest in mind (Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, 2013). Also, the bill has many inaccuracies and typos. This kind of work gives the government a bad appearance and makes them come off as uncaring. Typically, there are no specified training goals as such, nor are their ways to evaluate if the training actually accomplished these goals or not. This type of training and development occurs so naturally that many people probably aren’t aware that they’re in a training experience at all. Probably the most prominent form of informal training is learning from experience on the job. Examples are informal discussions among employees about a certain topic, book discussion groups, and reading newspaper and journal articles about a topic. A more recent approach is sending employees to hear prominent speakers, sometimes affectionately called â€Å"the parade of stars†. Informal training is less effective than formal training if one should intentionally be learning a specific area of knowledge or skill in a timely fashion. Hardly any thought is put into what learning is to occur and whether that learning occurred or not. (However, this form of training often provides the deepest and richest learning because this form is what occurs naturally in life.)Formal Training and DevelopmentFormal training is based on some standard â€Å"form†. Formal training might include:a) declaring certain learning objectives (or an extent of knowledge, skills or abilities that will be reached by learners at the end of the training),b) using a variety of learning methods to reach the objectives and thenb) applying some kind(s) of evaluation activities at the end of the training. Singer Joe Cocker and guitar player Carlos Santana, up to then unknown, became overnight stars. Some performers who were scheduled to appear could not due to traffic problems. Jimi Hendrix ended the event with a freeform solo guitar performance of The Star Spangled Banner. The dictionary defines a hippie as one who doesnt conform to societys standards and advocates a liberal attitude and lifestyle. Most of the people at Woodstock were not hippies in the commonly accepted sense: a good half of them, at least, were high school or college students from middle class homes (The Big Woodstock, 33). But at Woodstock they exhibited to the world many of the hippie values and life styles, from psychedelic clothing to spontaneous, unashamed nudity to open and casual sex, and also illicit drugs.
